The Clyde River Inuit of Baffin Island, NU

Jerry Natanine, the former mayor of Clyde River, criticizes the government for trying to own the water.

One year ago, the National Energy Board approved the use of seismic blasting off the coast of Baffin Island, NU. Seismic blasting involves shooting loud airguns into the ocean floor in order to find oil and gas.

The almost-constant blasts disrupt marine life and land animals that rely on hearing to hunt prey or hide from prey.

The National Energy Board failed to consult the Clyde River Inuit of Baffin Island, the traditional keepers of the land and sea around the island.

The Inuit, who rely on hunting and fishing for their livelihoods, will no doubt be affected when the seismic blastings begin in 2017.

On Wednesday, Nov. 30, the Supreme Court of Canada heard the Baffin Island Inuit's case.

"We care about our water, because that's where our life is."

- Former Clyde River Mayor Jerry Natanine

The sombre faces of participants at the rally remind us of the pressing importance of accessible and safe water.
