The Rally for Indigenous Rights

A giant banner depicting the narwhals of Clyde River looms over the tent sent outside the Supreme Court.

The rally at the Supreme Court was to show support for the indigenous communities of Clyde River and the Thames River, who weren't consulted about these major energy projects on their land.

Rallier Suze Morrison explains the importance of the rally.

Treaty rights dictate that the government has a duty to consult indigenous communities over their land use.

Rallier Suze Morrison says everyone has a responsibility to understand the treaties.

The signs at Wednesday's rally are copies of the ones used at the Standing Rock protests in North Dakota.

The signs are not only meant to represent the indigenous groups themselves, but all people.

A single sign sits propped up against a wall near the Supreme Court of Canada.

Rallier Suze Morrison explains the importance of solidarity on this issue.

"This whole issue of protecting the water and protecting the land, it’s not just a First Nation or indigenous rights issue anymore. This becomes a human rights issue. All people need water; all people need land."
